Being lost in your career path

Being lost in your career path

Being lost in your life and career path is something that many people struggle with.
But how does one solve this problem? Here are some questions to think about:

  1. Analyze your work style: Are you a procrastinator or an initiator?
If you are a procrastinator, then you’re someone who keeps all their tasks till the last minute and waits for their boss to tell them what to do. Such a person could work as an employee at a company. Whereas if you’re an initiator, you’re someone who comes up with new, creative ideas and feels willing to start or venture into a new project. You often despise having someone tell you what to do. This kind of person can be an entrepreneur or a business manager.
  2. What do you love to do in your spare time? Sometimes a hobby can lead to a career.
Just like many famous artists, football players, or singers, these people practiced a pastime they enjoyed, which one day turned into their main career and source of income. Do you think this applies to you?
  3. Think about your social preferences: do you like to work with people or alone?
If you like to work alone, then any job that is behind a computer or a pen and paper will suit you. (Ex: Writer, Accountant, Graphic Designer, Computer Engineer, Lab Scientist). But if you like to work with people, then you fit in a job where communication is necessary. (Ex: Teacher, Consultant, Sales, Manager/Supervisor, PR…)
  4. Ask experienced people in a field you are interested in.
It is very important to ask people around you who have worked in a field you might be interested in. These professionals can help you know everything about their job. JUST ASK FOR HELP!
  5. Go for an internship or a trial period: Evaluate a job by experiencing it.
This is the best way for you to know if you really like a certain job or fit in it — by simply TESTING IT! Once you experience a job by yourself, you will know exactly whether you want to continue with it or not. Doing internships or free trials can give you a taste of the real thing and help you make an informed decision. This is especially helpful if you’re a fresh graduate.
  6. Make sure your career is aligned with your personality and lifestyle.
For example, if you’re an introvert, then you obviously wouldn’t want to become a youtuber, comedian, or someone who presents talk shows. You might best fit in an office or a remote job on your own. Your career needs to be aligned with your personality for you to succeed and love what you’re doing.
  7. Create a realistic plan/wish list with details of your ideal job.
Planning makes your future achievements much easier and doable. Write down what you imagine yourself doing or what kind of environment you like to be working in.
  8. Be open to the unexpected, for every day is a new opportunity for something.
No matter how lost you feel you are in your career, a single opportunity in just one day can change your whole life, not just your career. So always keep your options open for new challenges and experiences!
